Changing Japan – The Bumpy Road Ahead

The Japanese Stewardship Code and Corporate Governance Code were adopted as part of the “third arrow” in Abenomics, named after Prime Minister Abe’s effort to revitalize the Japanese economy. Relative to his first two arrows on monetary policy and fiscal policy, the third arrow is challenging, as it deals with the structural reforms necessary to invigorate Japan Inc. The two codes are at the core of the “third arrow,” formally launched in June 2015. But the unfortunate timing of the Toshiba scandal has put a damper on these efforts, forcing companies to think beyond meeting minimum standards and simply “checking-the-box.”

In this presentation, Mr. Yang will review the progress made to date, and discuss the growing pains Japanese corporations will most likely have to go through for a meaningful structural reform over the long term.
